Troubled Reading Town resign from the Hellenic League

STEP 6 club Reading Town have resigned from the Division One East with immediate effect.

The club, formed in 1966 as Lower Burghfield, had changed its name several times during its existence. After Lower Burghfield, they were known as XL United, Vincents United, Reading Garage and ITS Reading before deciding on Reading Town.

They moved to their home of Scours Lane in 1993-94 and competed in the until they agreed a switch to the Hellenic League in June 2008.

Reading sat 11th in the 14-team Hellenic Division One East prior to their resignation, with the club holding several meetings before deciding to withdraw their first team.

Town chairwoman Natalie Newby said: “Following an EGM, a board meeting of Reading Town FC on Thursday February 11 and a meeting with the manager and players with the chairwoman on Friday February 12, a motion was adopted to withdraw the Reading Town FC men’s first team from Hellenic Division One East with immediate effect.

“Further motions were adopted and will be communicated in due course around the future of the club.”
