Ashes hero Steve Harmison moves into Non-League with Ashington

STEVE HARMISON has gone from an Ashes-winning hero to manager after being named as boss of his hometown team Ashington.

The giant fast bowler was part of the historic 2005 Ashes victory over the Australians and took 226 Test wickets for England between 2002 and 2009.

The former Durham man, 36, played for Ashington briefly as a youngster and the Division One club made the shock appointment on Sunday.

Harmison’s first game in charge will be Tuesday night’s visit of in the League Cup and the former cricket star will be assisted by head coach Ian Skinner and Lee Anderson.

Chairman Ian Lavery said: “All three have a wealth of experience in the sporting world and together can build on the success that Ashington Football Club have had since moving to Woodhorn Lane.”
