SUPPORTERS will be able to pay what they want to get in to Hitchin Town‘s game against Frome Town as the Canaries start up their ‘Floodlight Fund’.
The Evo-Stik League Southern Premier match on Saturday, January 16 will allow fans to pay whatever they see fit for entrance to Top Field.
The club are hoping the gesture will bring in a bumper crowd to watch Mark Burke’s young side as well as helping launch their fund for new floodlights.
While their long-term future at Top Field is still not secure, the club would be able to take the floodlights with them if a move did occur.
A club statement read: “There are two reasons for the club making this gesture. Firstly while we have an incredibly loyal fan base we want to encourage more people to come and see the good quality football our young squad are producing. The second reason is that we want to launch the new Floodlight Fund at this game.
“Our floodlight contractors have now told us the current floodlights must be replaced as they can no longer maintain them. They are over 50 years old and have reached the end of their lifespan and we really need to replace them in the close season.
“We have had a quote of nearly £60,000 for replacement floodlights but should qualify for a £30,000 grant from the Football Stadium Improvement Fund. This means the club have to raise £30,000 ourselves.
“We obviously still have the money raised from the Save Top Field campaign which we would like to put in to the Floodlight Fund. Then we need your help to enable us to reach our target.
“Your support of the Floodlight Fund will help move Top Field in to the current century and if the outcome of our deliberations is to stay at Top Field it will just be the first of many improvements and stadium developments.”
