THERE aren’t many football clubs in the country below the Premier League that have had as many eyes on them as Salford City in recent seasons.
Since the Class of 92’s arrivals in March 2014, the Ammies have been arguably the most talked about club in Non-League football – and who can blame them?
The BBC documentary showing the first season in charge for the Neville brothers, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs was a hit and a second series will be on our screens soon following on from the promotion-winning season under the management of Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley.
This season has been yet another successful one. A 3-2 play-off final victory over Workington has sent them into National League North and just two promotions from the Football League.
If that wasn’t enough, the Ammies also enjoyed a memorable FA Cup campaign that saw them grace our TV screens twice more.
Whitby Town, Curzon Ashton, Bradford Park Avenue and Southport were swept aside as Salford marched into the first round where they were rewarded with a home tie against Notts County.
A crowd of 1,400 squeezed into Moor Lane to witness a classic FA Cup tie as the Ammies showed more desire and, tellingly, more quality than their League Two visitors.
Goals from Danny Webber and Richie Allen were enough to claim a famous victory and a second round clash against Hartlepool, again televised on the BBC.
Salford once more were the better side and should have won, having to settle for a 1-1 draw at Moor Lane.
Unfortunately the replay at Victoria Park was one step too far but it shouldn’t take away from their wonderful journey in which four higher level sides were knocked out.
