COLLIERS WOOD UNITED are in mourning after promising young defender Matthew Kitwande was stabbed to death outside his own front door.
The 18-year-old was returning to his home in Battersea, south London from college on Tuesday when he was ambushed as he put his key in the front door lock at 4.15pm.
Paramedics fought to save Kitwande for almost an hour but he was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
The young right-back, who had represented his parents’ country of origin Uganda at youth level, had just been promoted to the Colliers Wood first team.
The Combined Counties League Premier side finished eighth last season and it was hoped Kitwande would have a big impact next season.
First team boss Tony Hurrell said: “He was a smashing lad, always on time and a pleasure to be around.
“I am just so shocked. He was a lovely boy and a good player at this level. His attitude was exemplary and we will all really miss him.”
A club statement added: “Matthew, just 18, was an excellent prospect with dreams of representing Uganda at some stage. Our commiserations to Matthew’s family.”
Scotland Yard confirmed an 18-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
Thoughts with his family and friends and all at the club at this difficult time. Best wishes from the football family in Lincoln
Awful. Thoughts and prayers with his family.
