GLOUCESTER CITY may have lost 3-1 at Tamworth last night but the club had other reasons for celebration – they have moved a step closer to returning home.
The National League North side have been without a ground since being forced out of their Meadow Park home in 2007 after heavy floods that left the club with eight feet of water.
They have been working hard to ensure a return to the city for the past nine years and the club were handed a major boost on Tuesday evening.
Outline planning permission for the new 4,000 capacity stadium was granted in September last year but the Tigers asked to carry out the work in phases rather than all at once.
That meant Gloucester County Council had to go over the planning permission again with the new alterations in mind and planners approved the project again, meaning the club are a step closer to home.
The Tigers shared with Forest Green Rovers and Cirencester Town before moving in with Cheltenham Town, where they have been for the past six years.
They have survived in the competitive National League North since promotion from the Southern Premier in 2009 and a ground to call their own would give them a huge boost.
Prior to the game at Tamworth, the club tweeted: “Gloucester City Council have voted to approve the latest application to the return to Meadow Park!”
