Adam Marriott Swaps Cambridge United for City

CAMBRIDGE UNITED director of Jez George feels allowing Adam Marriott to join on loan is the right move for the young striker’s career.

The 21-year-old, who is a product of the Cambridge United youth system, has featured just twice for the U’s this term and George says a short-term loan spell with City will prove beneficial in his development.

Speaking to the club’s website, George said: “Adam and I have spoken at length this week to discuss the best option for him and the club in the short-ter

“We know what we both want in the long term; Adam to be playing regularly and scoring goals for Cambridge United.

“However, with a number of players ahead of him in the pecking order at present, Adam’s opportunities to claim a place in the team are restricted.

“Adam needs regular football to improve the areas of his game that we highlight to him, develop as a player and stake a claim for a stating place by scoring goals.

“At the moment, we can’t provide that at Cambridge United and this creates a situation that is not doing him or the club any good.

“Having made Adam available for loan to clubs in the Blue Square Bet North and South, we did not feel that the right opportunity was available to Adam and we didn’t want to wait any longer for this situation to be resolved.

“Contrary to the perception of some, we are all desperate for Adam to succeed at Cambridge United. However, to play regularly at this level, he knows that he must improve certain aspects of his game.

“What we all believe though is that Adam is a talent with natural ability and the potential to score goals.

“What we have all failed to achieve to date is converting that talent and potential into a performance level that means Adam plays regularly in our team, so we all have the opportunity to see whether he can score goals consistently at this level.

“We do not want to give up on Adam but at the same time we must also do what is right for his career. This move will give him the chance to play regularly, score goals and he will then be a Cambridge United player again in January.”
