BIG-hearted Great Yarmouth Town players have donated their match day expenses to two footballers who sustained horrific injuries in a hit-and-run car accident.
The money was donated before the Bloaters’ 2-0 Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties Premier Division win at Newmarket Town last Saturday.
Newmarket’s Shaun Whiter lost both his legs after going to help his friend Joey Abbs, a Soham Town Rangers player, change a tyre at the roadside after he had broken down on July 1.
Jan Adamec, 40, from Haverhill, was subsequently jailed for 40 months after admitting two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Since the horror smash, around £150,000 has been raised for the injured pair, including the profits from a benefit tournament held by Cambridge United last month.
In addition to their players’ gesture, Great Yarmouth also donated money from club funds.
Their chairman Mike Guymer said: “When something tragic like this happens it shows we are part of a football family and everyone rallies round.”
A statement from Newmarket said that it was a “fantastic gesture” that was very much appreciated.
