SIMON AINGE went from zero to hero in a matter of seconds for Harrogate Town – missing an open goal before firing in an effort from the edge of the penalty area!

Ainge, a defender by trade, has been playing up front for Harrogate and has scored 17 times this season to make him the joint-second highest scorer in the North.

However, the centre-half in him came out on Saturday at as he missed an open goal from a yard out after a great ball across the box.

Fortunately for Ainge, he was handed another chance straight from the kick off after Gloucester played themselves into trouble.

And he took it with great calmness, firing in a low drive from the edge of the penalty area that whistled into the bottom left-hand corner as Harrogate claimed a point at Whaddon Road.

Town boss Simon Weaver told the club’s website: “I thought he (Ainge) was brilliant. He affected the first ball, they were worried about him from the first whistle to the last.

“Yes he missed a chance but what a reaction a minute later when he smacked one in from the edge of the box. I thought that was inspirational and a true test of character.”
