GRIMSBY TOWN have completed the signing of former Chesterfield skipper Derek Niven.
Scotsman Niven, 28, was released by the Spireites earlier this summer following an eight-and-a-half year spell with the Derbyshire outfit.
The former Raith Rovers and Bolton Wanderers midfielder subsequently joined the Mariners on trial and has now put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal with them.
Mariners joint-manager Paul Hurst is confident Niven will be a success at Blundell Park.
Hurst told the club’s website: “Derek’s main strengths are breaking play up and being a ball winner.
“He knows what it’s about and I’ve got no doubts he’ll prove his worth.”
