Nuneaton boss Wright reveals squad squander wages after shock FA Cup exit

Nuneaton Town boss Tommy Wright has revealed his players have sacrificed a week’s wages after their shocking exit from the FA Cup last weekend.
The Boro were outplayed and outclassed by Evo-Stik Northern Premier side Nantwich Town on Saturday afternoon, losing 3-1 on home soil to crash out of the famous old competition at the third qualifying round stage.
After their poor start to the National League North campaign, which sees Nuneaton languishing just two points clear of the relegation zone, losing to the Dabbers has intensified the unhappiness within Wright’s squad – so the player’s have put their money where their mouth is.
Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph, the manager said: “This is not just about Saturday, this is about the season as a whole.
“Yes Saturday leaves a financial gap for this football club, us giving up a week’s wage helps fill that.
“But it is more than that. It is about us showing that this hurts. Talk is cheap in football and we wanted to do something as a group to show that we mean it. We are sorry for how we have started and this seemed the best way.
“I mean this is going to hurt. We are not on big money, this is people’s bills we are talking about. But we wanted to act and in a way that shows that we are not happy and I think we have done that.”
The games keep coming thick and fast for Boro, and they’re not getting any easier as they face a trip to high-flying Blyth Spartans on Saturday.
Ahead of that tough test, Wright has moved to improve his struggling squad with the addition of former Peterborough centre-back Exodus Geohaghon, who was the manager’s first signing when arriving at the club last term.
“I just think we needed that experience, that voice. We needed someone to go out there and shout.” said Wright.
“I think we lacked that leadership on Saturday and throughout the season so far at times. Exodus has that and I am hoping he has the same kind of impact he did last year when he came in.
“He is just what we need at the moment and I think he can help bring the best out of the guys we have here already.”
