STRUGGLING Solihull Moors have put the Halloween frighteners on their rivals by landing former Republic of Ireland international Sean St Ledger on a short-term deal.
The 32-year-old centre-back has returned to play for his hometown club following a two-year spell in America’s Major Soccer League with Orlando City and Colarado Rapids.
Perhaps best known for his spells in the Championship at Preston North End and Leicester City, St Ledger made his debut for the Republic under Giovanni Trapattoni in 2009 and went on to win 37 caps, while starring in their Euro 2012 campaign.
Now, with Moors rooted to the foot of the National League table, St Ledger has answered a call from new boss Richard Money, signing a short-term deal until January, although goalkeeper Nathan Vaughan has this week left the club.
St Ledger said: “I’m pleased to be back playing football and I’m grateful for the opportunity to join Solihull, especially being from the area.
“I’ve not played a lot of football recently so it will be good for me to get some game time, but I want to help try and get the team up the table, that’s the main aim.
“I hope my experience will help. We need to win games and start winning them quickly. We all want to try and keep Solihull in the National League, we don’t want to drop down.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge, the games are going to benefit me and hopefully I can help Solihull get back up the table.”
Solihull, however, are not the only club to turn to a former international this week.
National League North promotion hopefuls Chorley have signed former Scotland centre midfielder Ian Black on non-contract terms until the end of the season.
The 32-year-old former Rangers, Blackpool and Hearts player, joins the Magpies – sixth in the table – having turned out recently for Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One North Skelmersdale United.
