Robbie Willmott Returns To Cambridge United

ROBBIE WILLMOTT has rejoined Cambridge United following a spell with their Conference Premier rivals Luton Town.

The 22-year-old got his first break in in 2006 when current U’s boss Jez George spotted him playing for Buntingford and offered him a trial.

He was later signed by the Abbey-based club and remained with them for four-and-a-half years, scoring 33 times in over 160 appearances.

Luton paid £50,000 to take him to Kenilworth Road in Janaury 2011 and he has since been a regular in the Hatters’ side.

However, his contract with the Bedfordshire outfit expired earlier this summer and he has now be snapped up by his former club.

Speaking about Willmott’s return, Jez George said: “Robbie understands what is now required from players at this football club and he is desperate for the opportunity to prove himself.

“When it comes to the crunch, Robbie is one of ours. He came through our scholarship scheme and, for whatever reason, has fallen foul of some of the pitfalls that exist for young players.

“We will work with him, like all of the other young players at the club, to be the best he can be and help the club become successful.”

Willmott himself added: “I am disappointed with the way my career has gone and I am grateful to the club for giving me this opportunity to get back on track.

“This is not a financial decision as I have learned that money is not everything.

“I could have easily have signed for other clubs in this league on far more money, in fact in some cases more than double.

“I now know that working with the right people at the right club is more important to me than anything. I am not going to say too much more in the press because I want to get on with working hard and do my talking on the pitch.”
