The SCL Unsung Hero winners are Brian and Roger Phillips (Corinthian Casuals)
At a time when a host of Non-League clubs are crying out for volunteers, Corinthian-Casuals can count themselves blessed they’ve got Brian and Roger Phillips to call on.
The twin brothers have been club stalwarts ever since the club moved to Tolworth 30 years ago.
They’ve done everything from laying down the terraces to putting up the stands. They run repairs on the ground and sweep the changing rooms.
Despite their senior years they both cycle to and from their home in Sunbury to Casuals at least five times a week. Over 30 years, it’s estimated they have covered 156,000 miles!
“What don’t we do on matchdays?” joked Roger. “We even clean up the changing rooms afterwards.
“You don’t do this job because you want to win awards. You do it because you enjoy doing it and if we manage to keep Corinthian-Casuals alive, so be it.
“People don’t realise – even for a humble club like an Isthmian League club – how much work there is to do.”
Brian believes the future is bright: “In the last few years, we’re getting more people in to help out at the ground and things are looking a lot better than they were a few years ago.”
