Gateshead have been issued with a winding up order for over £20,000.
The National League side are in turmoil off the pitch and have been attempting to cut costs.
Last week defender Fraser Kerr was sold to Hartlepool United – just hours after Heed manager Ben Clark was informed of the deal.
The club then rejected an offer for captain Scott Barrow from National League rivals Harrogate Town – only for Barrow to reveal his services were then offered to other clubs by an agent working for the club’s financial advisor Joseph Cala.
And on Friday the club failed to persuade the National League to lift a transfer embargo that has been in place since September. Despite this they have maintained their play-off push, winning at Aldershot on Saturday with just 14 outfield players available.
Now their problems have deepened behind the scenes after being issued with a winding up order by HMRC, but the club say they are working to solve the problem.
A statement read: “The club is well aware of the winding up order and has been speaking regularly with HMRC in order to settle these debts. This equates to £20,233.61.
“We are also speaking to the National League in order to release funds from our £200,000 bond in order to settle these debts and ensure the order goes no further, this was discussed at last Friday’s meeting.”
