York City boss Steve Watson has appeared to distance himself from a potential summer raid of his former club Gateshead.
The financially stricken National League club have a long list of players who will be out of contract at the end of the season, with individuals such as Jon Mellish, Robbie Tinkler, Tom White and Greg Olley likely to be in high demand from teams across the Non-League pyramid and beyond.
However, when speaking to the York Press, Watson said, “None of the players are contracted there beyond the end of the season, so what’s happening would make it easier to get them in from that respect and, if I’m being honest, I would have gone in for five or six of them,” Watson told The Press.
“But they have done that well this season that I just don’t think it will be possible, as I expect they will have a lot better and higher options now.”
York are currently sitting in 12th place in the National League North table, eight points adrift of the play-off positions.
