A LATE goal from debutant Charlie Cole snatched victory from the jaws of defeat for Canvey Island.
It was a slow start with chances limited, but Abbey’s Christian Assombalonga opened the scoring in the 67th minute as he fired in from 30 yards.
The Gulls piled on the pressure and eventually responded through Frankie Merrifield, who headed in George Craddock’s rebound.
And Cole wrapped things up in injury time, controlling a cross and finding the net to the delight of the many visiting fans at Capershotts.
