IT was Southampton U23s who progressed to the final of the South Shields challenge cup tournament at a blustery Mariners Park.
Neither side tested the opposition keeper in the opening stages, a trialist going close for Shields cutting in from the right and firing a shot over Alex Cull’s crossbar.
It was the Saints who looked most likely to score with Jake Hesketh creating two half chances, twice floating in two teasing balls into the Shields box to no avail.
