■ WANTAGE kicked off the new league campaign with a fine win over Welwyn Garden City, almost matching last season’s points total in one fell swoop.
And the victory came despite losing skipper Olly Goddard to a painful displocated elbow in the first half.
Wantage were already ahead by then, though, Jack Alexander on the end of a freekick routine to slot home from close range.
Lopes De Matos had an effort cleared off the line early in the second half and Buchanan mis-hit a shot just past the hour when well-placed.
