GATESHEAD marked the return of fans to the International Stadium after 17 months with an impressive win over League Two newcomers Hartlepool.
But for Pools keeper Ben Killip the Heed would have scored more than four as they turned on the style.
A crowd of 723 saw the visitors capitalise on an early error that saw Gavan Holohan set up a trialist at the back post.
Cedwyn Scott had already forced a save from Killip, Gateshead going close three times in as many minutes before levelling.
