JOHN Herdman honed his skills at Consett Juniors – now he is heading to the World Cup in Qatar.
The lad from the County Durham steel town is going down in Canadian football folklore after leading the nation to the finals for the first time in 36 years.
Along with Gareth Southgate, Herdman, 46, will be the only English head coach at the tournament when it kicks off in November.
It is a world away from his teenage years when all he wanted to do was play for Northern League Consett’s first team.
