A HAT-TRICK from leading scorer Sam Evans was not enough to give Hanwell all three points in an entertaining encounter.
An eight-goal thriller had looked highly unlikely for most of a first half, but against the run of play the visitors snatched the lead after 40 minutes when Jamie Barron followed up to score from close range after Town debutant keeper Sam Beasant had made a good block.
This sparked the Geordies into life and in the next five minutes they scored twice through Evans.
