WYLL Stanway has thanked Chester for helping him fulfil his dream of playing in the Football League.
The England C goalkeeper has become a fans’ favourite at the Deva Stadium, where he has spent the last two seasons since joining the Seals from Holker Old Boys.
But now the 23-year-old has been handed a shot in the professional game after being snapped up by hometown club
Barrow. Stanway achieved 19 clean sheets in 46 appearances for the National League North side last season, contributing to Chester’s tenth-place finish.
And talking to social media, the 6ft 4in stopper said: “Just like to take the time to thank every single person involved with Chester from my teammates, staff and, more importantly, the best supporters in Non-League. Thank you.
“I leave with friends for life and memories that will last forever. I wish the club every success.”
Stanway joins the League Two Bluebirds on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee and added: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign for my hometown club.
“It happened quite quickly, but I am happy to get it finalised. You can see the direction the club is going, and I am excited to be a part of this. I can’t wait to get going.”
Stanway, brother of England’s Georgia, made his England C debut against Wales in March and assistant manager Mick Payne was impressed by the youngster.
Payne told The NLP: “Wyll was called up by England C in March. We did our homework and research, I had a chat with the Chester manager (Calum McIntyre) and he said how impressive he was.
“When he came away with the team he fitted in great and, for me, he has got huge potential with this dream move. It just shows England C really gives a great platform to help push players into the Football League.”
