TOMMY Widdrington admits he jumped at the chance to link up with another former player at Aldershot Town – and he doesn’t care what anyone says!
The Shots boss added another familiar face to the ranks at the EBB Stadium by bringing in midfield ace Cameron Hargreaves from his old club King’s Lynn Town on a one-year deal.
Hargreaves played the majority of the 2022-23 season with Widdrington at Garden Walk before the boss jumped ship to Aldershot just three weeks before the end of the season. He joins a number of former teammates at his new club – including Widdrington’s son and central midfield partner Theo – and the boss says he is well worth the season-long wait to finally bring him on board.
“If truth be known, I would have signed Cameron earlier but for one reason or another it just didn’t happen,” Widdrington said.
“I feel with the lads in the group Cam is already familiar with, and that we’ve worked together before, should be looked as nothing other than a real positive.
“I know one or two people will say ‘another one he knows from previous club(s)’ but to be honest it goes straight over my head!
“Cameron brings qualities to this group we simply didn’t show enough of last season – his energy and fitness levels will be second to none whilst his hunger and desire are exactly the ingredients we feel we need to add to some of the genuine technical ability we already have at our disposal.”
Hargreaves came through the youth ranks at Exeter City before joining Bristol Rovers where he made 20 EFL appearances.
He gained loan experience with Hungerford Town and Chippenham Town before his switch to Kings Lynn.
Shots’ head of recruitment Jamie Hedges is a big fan. He added: “I’m sure he’ll be a fans favourite here, as he was at his previous club!
“His energy, work rate and engine is infectious and one of the best I’ve seen. He is a team player and one every team needs.
“Cam has great experience and we feel that Cam’s at a good age now where he can really kick on and impact things for us in this division.”
