WIDNES made the perfect start to the new campaign with an emphatic win over Kidsgrove Athletic.
Michael Ellison’s team took a 25th-minute lead when Liam Paton fired home from inside the six-yard area from Jack McGowan’s cut-back.
It was all Widnes in the first half with James Steele going close to a second on the stroke of half-time, narrowly missing the target.
Grove brought on imposing veteran Matt Rhead at the break, but never tested Widnes keeper Mark Halstead, coming closest when Robbie Hatton fired over.
