POPULAR Wrexham boss Andy Morrell has parted company with the Dragons following two-and-half years in charge at the Racecourse.
The news came out this morning after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Barnet on Saturday left the Welsh club in 13th and ten points off the play-off places.
Morrell had come close to leading the Dragons back into the Football League, losing to Welsh rivals Newport County at Wembley last season in the play-off final.
Just over a month before that game, Morrell led his side to FA Trophy glory after a penalty shoot-out win over Grimsby Town to become the Trophy’s first ever Welsh winners.
However, they haven’t been able to get going this term and both parties thought a change was right, with Morrell’s assistant Billy Barr taking over in an interim capacity.
Morrell said: “I feel it is in the best interests of both Wrexham FC and me to make a change now, so that we can all plan for the future with certainty.
“I’m disappointed with how this season has gone, as I desperately wanted to lead the club I love back to the Football League where I feel it belongs.
“However, I’m really proud of my achievements over the last two years and to see 20,000 Wrexham fans celebrating with me holding the FA Trophy will live long in my memory.
“During my time here I’ve been treated with the utmost respect by the board and I’d like to thank them and the fans for their support, as both a player and manager.
“I’d also like to thank the players and backroom staff for all their hard work and support throughout my tenure and wish them every success for the future.”
