Dom Roma confirmed as Gainsborough Trinity’s permanent manager

ROOKIE boss Dom Roma has been named ‘s permanent manager despite “a number of very experienced applications”.

Roma, who was Trinity’s captain, stepped up to take caretaker charge of the side in March after the departure of long-serving boss Steve Housham.

Gainsborough lost just three of Roma’s nine games in charge as the defender led the club to survival.

They signed off the season with a 4-1 victory at Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday and it was followed by news that he would be in charge next season.

Roma, who has named ex- boss Martin Foster as his assistant, said: “I’m very proud to be given the manager’s job. I spoke to the chairman (Richard Kane) earlier in the week and I told the lads before the game.

“I always thought I might have gone into managing when my playing career had finished a few years down the line but an opportunity came up and I want to take it with both hands.

“Fans can be assured that I will give everything to the role. I did as a player and I’ll do the same as a manager – I’m really excited for next season.

“I intend to be just a manager but I’ll keep myself fit and register as a player. I don’t envisage playing next season unless we have an injury crisis.

“If Gainsborough could get into the Conference, it would be a massive boost for the whole town. I’m not saying I’ll put together a team capable of winning the league but I want us to progress next season.”

A club statement added: “The board had decided previously that they wanted to give a young enthusiastic person the post; someone who could bring challenge and life to a team, which this year has singularly failed to impress.

“A number of applications, some from very experienced managers, had been received but in the end the directors have gone with their instincts and agreed to give Dom a contract.

“Dom has given a report to the board showing how he intends to move the club forwards and they were impressed by his appetite for achievement and knowledge of players who he feels can bring success.

“The new season starts on August 6 and Dom has assured the board that on top of key players from our existing squad that he has the contacts and knowledge externally to put together a team which will enable the club to progress next year.”
