NUNEATON TOWN boss Tommy Wright has made two-time Conference promotion winner Ashley Chambers his third signing of the week.
Chambers, 26, joins Boro on loan from League Two club Grimsby Town until the end of the season having made 16 appearances for the Mariners this term.
The former Leicester City youngster helped York City do an FA Trophy and Conference promotion final double in 2011-12.
He then won promotion to the Football League again in 2013-14 as part of the Cambridge United squad that beat Gateshead in the play-off final at Wembley.
Chambers signed for Grimsby in the summer but has been allowed to depart by new boss Marcus Bignot and Boro manager Wright is excited by his potential.
He told the club’s website: “I am delighted to be able to add a striker of this quality to the squad. He has a great pedigree and arrives here from a Football League club.
“I came through the ranks with him at Leicester City; he’s four years younger than me but was always prolific during his time at the club.
“He was extremely highly thought of and made his first-team debut at the age of just 15 as well as being capped by England at various youth levels.
“We also played together at Grimsby Town and have always got on well and stayed in touch over the years. He is a good finisher with great movement and pace. He’s played out wide for the majority of his career but I see him as a central striker.”
Wright has also strengthened his squad with the signings of goalkeeper Tyrell Belford and defender Jim Mutton.
Belford, born in Nuneaton, moves to his hometown club after a spell with National League South club Oxford City.
The stopper, 22, started his career with Coventry before spells with Liverpool and Swindon. He started the season on loan at National League side Southport and has signed a contract with Boro until the summer of 2018.
Big centre-half Mutton has also checked in and joins Nuneaton from Evo-Stik League Southern Premier outfit Redditch United.
“He is a player that I hold a lot of respect for having played and managed against him,” said Boro boss Wright.
“He’s played at the level below for the last two seasons, but he’ll make the step up to the National League North with ease.”
