YORK CITY boss Gary Mills says it’s important that the Minstermen are able to climb back up to the National League “as quickly” as they can.
City’s final day draw with promotion hopefuls Forest Green Rovers wasn’t enough as a late Guiseley goal against Solihull Moors consigned Mills’ men to relegation to Step 2.
Mills, who returned to Bootham Crescent in October, has guided the club to the FA Trophy final but despite a good run of form towards the end of the season, they lost their fight against relegation.
Southport and North Ferriby were also relegated alongside York, Kidderminster and Salford City narrowly missed out on promotion and will both be full-time, while Stockport County, Tamworth, Harrogate, Nuneaton and Boston will all be hopeful of a promotion push.
Mills admits Step 2 could take some getting used to for the club, who were relegated back into Non-League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
“We know the importance of getting back up as quickly as we can, but we’re not naïve,” Mills told the York Press.
“I think every season people say these divisions are getting tougher and we’ve got to be at our best from the word go.
“For the fans, it might be difficult at the start because everyone will want us to be at the top and I’m hoping that’s where we can be, because we’ll be looking to bounce back straight away.
“But our frame of mind has to be one of respect for the league we are in, because we’ll be playing against some tough teams next season.”
