boss Jay Saunders has expressed his delight after the club tied down goalkeeper Lee Worgan on a long-term deal.

The stopper has put pen to paper on a new contract at the Gallagher Stadium which will keep him at the club for at least the next two years.

The 32-year-old was recently named club captain and has played all 130 Stones games since joining at the start of the 2013-14 season.

He has been a key part of Maidstone’s success so far this season with the club sitting second in the South and boasting by far the best defensive record.

Saunders said: “I am pleased to get Worgs tied up, as he was out of contract at the end of the season. He’s one of the best goalkeepers certainly in this league, if not in – so it was a no-brainer to get something sorted.

“It’s this time of year when we try and get those who are coming out of their contracts sorted and this is a great bit of business for us and for the foreseeable future that we’ve got Worgs between the sticks.

“He’s a lively character around the changing room which is important for us and a lot of the younger lads look up to him and that’s one of the reasons I made him captain. He does the coaching side for us as well but the main thing is that on a Saturday he’s helped to get us where we are.”
