LEATHERHEAD are “disappointed” to sell forward Vas Karagiannis to Maidstone United but say the player’s repeated transfer requests left them with no choice.
Karagiannis, who can play as a striker or winger, had netted 13 times in the Ryman Premier for the Tanners this term to attract interest from higher divisions.
With his contract up at the end of the season, Leatherhead decided to cash in now, agreeing to terms with National League South side Maidstone United.
In a statement, Leatherhead expressed their disappointment at the situation and claimed Karagiannis’ mind wasn’t on playing for the club.
“The club is disappointed to make this announcement but in recent weeks Vas along with his agent, has been repeatedly requesting that the club allow him to move on to play at a higher level of football,” the Tanners said.
“A number of clubs have been expressing an interest in Vas, having been encouraged to do so by his agent, against our wishes. It had become clear that this had unsettled Vas whose mind has not been on playing football for Leatherhead in recent games.
“Whilst he was under contract to us until the end of this season, it is never easy to keep an unsettled and unhappy player so the board along with the past and present management team unanimously agreed to negotiate an agreement to allow Vas to move on.
“There is always the chance that good, young players will seek to progress their careers at a higher level, and as sorry as we are to lose the services of Vas, who has entertained us during his time at the club, we would like to wish him every success in his future career.”
