Chelmsford City won’t be rushing their managerial appointment

chairman Trevor Smith says the club have whittled down their manager search to five names but insists they won’t be rushed into making a quick decision.

The Clarets have been without a permanent boss since the departure of Mark Hawkes last month, with Kevin Maher currently in caretaker charge.

Chelmsford sit 16th in the South, just five points above the relegation places and Smith reckons the next managerial appointment is a crucial one for the future of the club.

“I’ve been very pleased and impressed by the standard of manager we’ve had apply for the job, we’ve had near on 50 people apply,” said Smith.

“We’ve now narrowed that down to a shortlist of five and we will be looking to interview those five over the next week or two. Kevin is doing a good job as caretaker and he is going to be one of the people we’re interviewing.

“We’ve got some top managers and a former League manager we’re looking to interview. They’re the kind of people to adhere to our five-year plan to take the club to the top of Non-League football in that time.

“It’s not something we’re going to rush, it’s a decision that’s quite crucial to the future of the club. It’s vital we don’t get relegated this year and we want a manager that can bring in winners.”
