WOKING defender Joe McNerney reckons he knows how to stop free-scoring Luton on Monday night… by attacking them!
The Cards, in 16th but only nine points adrift of the play-offs, will be making their TV debut on BT Sport at Kenilworth Road as they aim to end the Skrill Premier leaders’ unbeaten run at 27 games.
The Hatters grabbed an invaluable late point at second placed Cambridge United on Tuesday night and are 14 points clear after the U’s drew with Dartford on Saturday.
John Still‘s men have scored a whopping 30 goals in their last seven games, an average of over four a match but McNerney says the best way to stop them is by giving them a taste of their own medicine.
“It’s our first time on TV against the team at the top of the league who are absolutely flying and we’re excited about it,” he said.
“We’re not going to go there and fear them. We’ll play our game and I think we’ve got a chance with some of the results we’ve had this season.
“They’re scoring a lot of goals but you prepare the same way for every game. Andre Gray and Paul Benson are both top strikers but we’re not going there to shut up shop.
“We went to Halifax, Gateshead and Barnet and won – not many other sides have done that. We’re quite an attacking side who likes to control games and if we can take our chances on Monday, we’ve got a chance.”
The Cards can call on former Hatter Scott Rendell, who has scored five times in his last five matches while the home side will be without Luke Guttridge due to a metatarsal injury.
And while the focus will be on Luton’s goalscoring exploits, McNerney has warned the Hatters not to take their own goal-getters lightly.
He said: “Scott has been superb for us. He’s a bit of a target and something we were lacking at the start of the season. And we’ve also got Jack Marriott who has scored a few.
“We’re an attacking team and we’re not going to change that. Luton are a brilliant side but their run has to end at some point.”
It’s surely only a matter of time until the Hatters officially seal their Football League return but boss John Still said: “I’m a funny sort. I don’t get carried away. I never get too high and I never get too low.
“We still have to go and get points to win this league but I think we’ve shown for most of this season that we have the attributes to do that. We just have to keep performing to do that.”
