SEAN CLANCY is desperate to clinch the Skrill North title with AFC Telford on Saturday so he can deliver on the pledge he made to supporters when he signed.
The wide midfielder was unveiled at the club when he attended last year’s end of season bash just as the Shropshire side had been relegated.
Despite that disappointment, it was then he promised an immediate return to the Conference Premier as new manager Liam Watson’s first signing.
Clancy told The NLP: “When I first signed towards the end of last season, Liam (Watson) got the job and I was his first signing.
“We went to the end of season do and I was telling the fans I was mixing with who were asking if we were going to win the league, ‘yeah, we’re going to win it’. With all the players I knew we were bringing in, ‘we are definitely going to win it’.
“I’m going to be glad if I can turn around and say ‘I told you we’d win the league!’ because I promised a few fans that night that we were going to become champions. It’d be nice to be able to deliver.”
The Bucks will win their first league title since 1952 with victory against Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday, but anything less than three points opens the door for North Ferriby United.
Clancy achieved promotion with Fleetwood in 2010, albeit via the play-offs, and wants a taste of a winner’s medal this time.
“It would be nice to win promotion as champions,” he added. “It’s good going into the play-offs because it’s exciting and it’s a cup final that anyone can win, but it’d be even better to go one step further and finish the league as champions.
“The gaffer spoke to us after the draw at Solihull on Monday and said it’s there for us. We’ve had ups and downs, especially towards the end of the season where we’ve dropped points we didn’t think we would but come full time hopefully it’s promotion for Telford.
“That was my goal when I signed and we’re within touching distance now. We know what we’ve got to do.”
