CONGRATULATIONS to Wayne Rooney for breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s England goalscoring record after netting his 50th goal for the Three Lions last night.
Of course, Wayne’s brother John currently plays for Chester in the Vanarama National League but Rooney’s Non-League connections don’t stop there.
Wayne’s grandfather Billy Morrey and his uncle – also called Billy Morrey – tormented Non-League defences in the 1950s and 70s for the likes of Burscough and Marine.
Following Rooney’s first England goal on September 6 2003, Stuart Hammonds spoke to his granddad Morrey for an article in The Non-League Paper.
Even back then, it was clear Rooney would go on to be a key player for the Three Lions in years to come and thankfully he hasn’t fallen foul to the family genes.
“He’s like me, although I was smaller than the rest of them (my brothers),” Billy Snr said regarding Rooney. “It’s all there in the blood, but I hope they don’t have gout like me!”
