Ex-Black Cat Joins Chester

have secured the services of former Sunderland reserve team captain Michael Kay ahead of their return to the Conference Premier.

Kay regularly skippered the Black Cats’ second string during the 2009/10 season and made his senior debut for the club in an tie against Blackburn in February 2009.

That proved to be his only first-team appearance while at the Stadium of Light, although he spent spells on loan with Conference side Gatehead in 2010 and League One club Tranmere Rovers in 2011.

The 23-year-old joined Tranmere on a permanent basis in the summer of 2011 but first-team opportunities were limited during his two seasons at Prenton Park.

He has now dropped down two divisions to sign for the newly-promoted Blues, whose manager Neil Young has been impressed by the defender’s ability and attitude.

Speaking to the club’s website, Young said: “Michael is a player we have been speaking to from the start of our recruitment process and I’m really happy that he has chose to come and join us.

“He comes with good experience from both Sunderland and Tranmere Rovers and has a great hunger to do well here and is another good signing for the club.”
