Smith Quits Gateshead

ANTH SMITH says he decided to resign as manager of as he was frustrated that the high standards he set weren’t being met and he didn’t “want to jeopardise the club going forward by hanging around too long”.

News of Smith handing in his resignation surfaced following the club’s 2-1 defeat to on Saturday – their third loss in three games – and before long it was being reported by numerous social media channels.

His resignation was accepted by chairman Graham Wood, despite the fact that Smith says he over-reacted and would have been willing to try and turn things around.

Speaking to the club’s website, Smith said: “I was annoyed with the performance against Barnet and I was frustrated by the lack of progress in the performances during the opening week.

“The preparation for the games was spot on but I began to question whether I was getting the message across as too many players weren’t performing to the levels they are capable of.

“I wear my heart on my sleeve and set high standards. When those standards aren’t met it hurts and I didn’t want to jeopardise the club going forward by hanging around too long.

“The response from the players was fantastic, they accepted their responsibility in the three defeats – 10/12 players came up to see me – that they had under-achieved and that I shouldn’t be too hasty.

“It was much appreciated that the players were solidly behind me. I spoke with the chairman on Saturday night and agreed to talk again the next day.

“I was prepared to come in on Monday and have another crack. In hindsight it had been an over-reaction after the game but is an emotional game.

“I was prepared to withdraw the offer to resign but the story had gathered momentum overnight and the chairman was put in an awkward position.

“What is said in the dressing room should stay in the dressing room but unfortunately it got out and within minutes of the game finishing on Saturday it was on social media.

“I have no axe to grind. It is not about me, it is about Gateshead Football Club having a good season and progressing. The squad is certainly good enough to do well.

“They are a good bunch of lads and it is only a matter of time before they come good.

“I have learnt a harsh lesson but I’ve had a long career in the game and intend to stay in football.

“What has happened is disappointing but it is time to move on and I wish Gateshead all the best this season and beyond.”

  1. I think Anth Smith could see the writing on the wall and got out quick. What I saw of Gateshead at Kidderminster, they are relegation fodder!
