Two cup titles and two runner-up places were Liverpool in 2021-22.
As the long season finally came to a close, it was a season full of mixed feelings for the Reds. The side clinched the English cup titles on offer – the EFL Cup and the FA Cup– and poised for a quadruple finish, only to have their hopes taken away in May.
A second-place finish in the Premier League despite the last game heroics and another disappointing loss in the UEFA Champions League final completed the Liverpool season.
While it was disappointing not to see Liverpool taking home the Premier League and the Champions League, the blend of rugby that Liverpool played was exceptional.

But what cost Liverpool were the draws early in the season. An early 1-1 draw against Chelsea followed by draws against Brentford and Manchester City ended up costing the side from reaching their second Premier League title in four years.
In 2022, there wasn’t too much riding on Liverpool for the league title. However, following the 2-2 draw, Liverpool caught fire, winning all ten games.
The turning point, however, was the draw against Tottenham Hotspur. In superior form, Liverpool could not capitalize on the opportunity, and the game ended 1-1 with a 57th-minute goal from Heung Min Son.
After Manchester City drew with West Ham on the penultimate weekend, it came down to the final week for the title race. If City drew or lost with Aston Villa, provided that Liverpool won against the Wolves, they were set to take the league title home.
The final day of English football saw a thrilling finish where Villa was in the lead 2-0 and Liverpool led 2-1 against the Wolves with a goal from Salah. However, City came back from the dead to master a 3-2 win.
MVPs everywhere
The season was one hell of a ride for the team, with all their players performing and exceeding expectations. Liverpool led the league allowing only 26 goals in the entire season, and goalkeeper Allison took the Golden Glove with 20 clean sheets.
The Golden Boot title went down to the last game with Spur’s Heung Min Son and Mo Salah leading the race. As Salah scored Liverpool’s final goal for the season, the duo shared the Golden Boot scoring 23 goals.
Salah also took major honors in the assists leaderboard with 13 assists in the season. His teammate Sadio Mane was the 5th highest goalscorer with 16 goals, and Diogo Jota came in 6th 15 goals.
UEFA Champions League
This year’s Champions League runs started for the Reds in celebratory fashion. They became the first Champions League side to win all six of their group stage games.
Following this success, Liverpool faced Inter Milan, which they won 2-1 on aggregate to proceed to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals weren’t too easy against Benefica, but the first leg honors of 3-1 gave them an upper hand. In the second fixture, the game was drawn 3-3, and Liverpool progressed.
In the semifinals, Liverpool faced Villarreal, and the Reds advanced to the finals, winning the fixture 5-2 on aggregate.
It was a perfect setting for the Reds to seek vengeance from Real Madrid, the side they lost in 2018, but a spirited display of football from Madrid prevented them from doing so.
A goal from Vinicius Junior in the 59th minute sealed the deal for Real Madrid. Liverpool made 23 attempts at goal during the game, and none of them saw the net, thanks to a spirited performance by Thibaut Courteous. It was a disappointment for the side who lost two Champions League finals to Real Madrid under Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool qualified for the Champions League once again next year, and they live to fight again.
EFL Cup
The English Football League Cup was a fight for Liverpool. After qualifying for the quarterfinals, the game went into penalties against Leicester City to decide who made it to the next round. The teams were drawn 3-3, and later, Liverpool ended up winning 5-4 on penalties.
In the semifinal, it was Arsenal who faced Liverpool. After the first leg ended 0-0, a brace from Diogo Jota sealed it for Liverpool in the second leg.
The final against Chelsea was a final to remember in the EFL Cup history. The game eventually went to penalties, with both clubs not scoring in the regulation time.
The penalty shootout extended until the final kick taker in the side – the goalkeeper. While Liverpool’s goalkeeper Kelleher got it through, Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga floored the kick over the posts to give Liverpool the win.
FA Cup
The FA Cup final was another meeting between Chelsea and Liverpool. Earlier, Liverpool defeated the spirited Manchester City side 3-2 to reach the finals.
The game didn’t go to the final penalty taker this time around, but it ended 6-5 for Liverpool. Mason Mount missed out on a goal for Chelsea, and so did Cesar Azpilicueta and the advantage turned to Liverpool.
Liverpool’s Sadio Mane couldn’t get his penalty through against his Senegal teammate Mendy, but as Tsimikas slotted his goal in sudden death, it was a win for the Reds.
New Season
With Jurgen Klopp’s contract extended until 2026, it is safe to say that the maestro who transformed Liverpool in the last five years is here to stay for the long game. The previous four seasons saw Liverpool finishing 90+ points in the Premier League consecutively, which is a clear indication of the brand of football they are playing.
Expect Liverpool to bring in a few big signings ahead of the season. While the Salah contract situation is yet to be sorted out, Sadio Mane is expected to leave the club. Klopp will also need reinforcements in the midfield and build a team for the future.
