TONBRIDGE ANGELS have raised over £22,000 for their Football Fightback campaign that is aiming to screen 800 young people in the quest to eradicate death through undetected cardiac issues.
The campaign was launched at the start of the season after Angels’ Junior Dian, who was on trial with the Ryman Premier club, died after collapsing in a pre-season friendly at Whyteleafe in July.
The money raised will allow not only Angels players but also members of the West Kent Sunday League, Tonbridge & District Football League and Tonbridge Juniors FC to be screened. The first screening will be on the weekend of January 9-10.
The campaign has received significant support and advice from the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) which promotes the prevention of young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research together with the provision of support for affected families.
Angels chairman Steve Churcher said: “Today’s generous donation by AXA has brought the total raised to go over the £22,000 mark and we are absolutely delighted by that. Every contribution large or small is enormously valuable because it can make such a difference.”
