Matt Henman to step down as Dereham Town boss after nine years at the helm

RYMAN NORTH outfit  are searching for a new boss after Matt Henman announced his intention to step down after Saturday’s final game of the season.

Henman has enjoyed plenty of celebrations since taking over at Aldiss Park nine years ago when the Magpies were in the .

In 2013 he led the club to promotion to the Ryman North and they have since consolidated at Step 4. Dereham also won the Norfolk Senior Cup in 2011 and 2016.

The Magpies could finish as high as 13th if they beat in their final league game on Saturday, which will also be Henman’s last at the helm.

The departing boss will continue in his role as an academy coaching tutor at the Dereham Education and Academy, which is a partnership between the club and Dereham Sixth Form College.

“I’ve got no special plans -wise at all – I’m not going to jump into something else,” he told the Eastern Daily Press.

“I want to be able to spend more time with my family and it’s the right time to allow myself to do that.

“As a manager at this level you never get a break. Even in the summer you’re sorting out your squad for next season, negotiating player contracts, pre-season friendlies, travel for next season.

“You have always got to be sure you go into each season with the same energy and motivation. I just think after nine years, 12 if you include my time at King’s Lynn, that it’s time for a break.”
