It was a stunning strike from Aldershot Town striker Matt McClure against Leyton Orient on Saturday, and his celebration wasn’t bad either.
The former Wycombe forward has since dedicated his golf swing celebration to team-mate Nick Arnold, who recently underwent surgery on a cruciate ligament injury and is likely to be out of action until March.
“Nick Arnold was in for his op this week,” the 25-year-old told Get Surrey, “Me, Nick and Rens [Scott Rendell] like a bit of golf so I text him on Saturday morning and asked how the operation went.
“He said ‘when you score give me a golf celebration’ so I gave him a Happy Gilmore, for Nick.”
McClure also spoke about finding the net more regularly this season after receiving criticism for his profligacy last term, Saturday’s goal giving him four in eleven so far this year.
“I don’t know what’s been different, I’ve just followed on my form from the end of last season and it’s probably a confidence thing too.
“My confidence took a knock at the start of last season when I wasn’t getting the goals; I was playing well but I just couldn’t get it in the net and I think a bit of frustration kicked in.
“I’m playing a lot more freely this year and while I probably haven’t played as well as I did at the start of last season, I’m getting on the scoresheet so I’m doing my job.”
