Torquay United boss Owers not getting carried away despite first win

By Matt Bishop
manager Gary Owers says he and his players will not be getting carried away, despite finally sealing the club’s first win of the season.
After a torrid run of 13 games without a victory, The Gulls hammered Maidenhead at Plainmoor last night, beating Alan Devonshire’s side 4-0 to claim their first three points of the campaign.
Despite the emphatic victory, which saw Torquay blow their visitors away by scoring all four goals in the first half, Owers’ men remain rooted to the foot of the and the boss is refusing to get ahead of himself.
Speaking to the Radio Devon, the former manager said: “We’re not going to jump on an open top bus tomorrow and celebrate three points, but we had to win at some stage.
“It’s a great night. It’s only a small step, we’re not getting carried away, we’re not jumping up and down in there, but it’s our first win in 13 or 14 and it’s not a great record, so it’s a starting point for us.”
Before last night, The Gulls had scored just five times in 12 matches, but the manner of the performance – and the goals scored – pleased the Torquay boss massively, and he now wants them to keep improving.
“It was terrific.” said Owers. “I’m thankful, I’m relieved and hopefully we can move on now.
“It was how I want them to play, quick tempo, passing the ball, moving the ball quickly, getting the ball to the attacking players and we did a bit of damage.”
