The chasing pack in the Bostik Premier failed to capitalise on Billericay’s night off from league action as Hendon and Kingstonian lost, but Leiston did claim a big three points that moved them joint top.
Hendon, who are level on points with Glenn Tamplin’s men at the top of the division, could have gone top with a positive result at Enfield Town, but fell to a 1-0 defeat and lost ground on the leaders.
In an incredibly tight promotion chase, Kingstonian also could have ended the night at the summit, but they remain two points off top spot. They were thrashed 5-1 by Burgess Hill, a side still high on confidence after beating Wealdstone in the FA Cup.
The real winners at the top were Leiston, who capitalised on slip-ups to move joint top after edging past Brightlingsea Regent 3-2. A late Byron Lawrence strike, four minutes from time, sealed a big three points for the home side.
Play-off chasing Staines claimed the result of the night, after they hammered struggling Tooting & Mitcham 7-0. The Swans have now hit 13 goals against Mitcham without reply, with Elliot Buchanan netting a six-minute hat-trick last night.
Harrow Borough also have promotion aspirations, and they swept Wingate & Finchley aside, winning 3-0 thanks to goals from Charlie Banya, Adam Richards and Taurean McDonald-Richards.
Tonbridge Angles and Margate, two sides on the cusp of the play-off spots, played out a frustrating 0-0 stalemate, but weren’t leapfrogged by Folkestone Invicta after Youssef Bamba and Alex Addai secured a 2-0 win for Merstham.
Towards the wrong end of the division, Metropolitan Police produced an impressive performance to beat Dorking Wanderers 4-1. A Jonathan Wright brace helped the home side on their way, as Matt Briggs was sent off for Dorking.
Lowly Thurrock also claimed an important victory, against fellow strugglers Needham Market, as they won 1-0 – Remi Sutton the goalscorer.
