Eastleigh boss Richard Hill has apologised to the club’s fans, and offered to donate £500 to charity, after he criticised their ‘poor performances’.
The Spitfires slumped to 18th in the National League on Saturday following their 2-0 defeat to Barrow, and the players were booed off by their supporters – something Hill questioned.
However, following Eastleigh‘s draw with Maidenhead last night, the manager back-tracked on his comments and apologised to the Spitfires faithful.
Speaking to Radio Solent, Hill said: “I was critical of the fans Saturday. I don’t think in any way, shape or form that I blamed them for the defeat.
“If they think I was blaming them for Saturday, I wholeheartedly apologise for that.
“It wasn’t meant that way. Sometimes I have a habit of saying what I think, whatever the consequences.”
Eastleigh looked to be heading to their third consecutive defeat last night, but two goals in the final six minutes saw Hill’s team comeback to draw 2-2.
The 54-year-old now wants to draw a line under the whole episode, saying: “They’ve [the fans] had their say about it and been very critical of me, which is fair enough.
“What I’m prepared to do if the fans want to, is donate £500 to a charity of their choice on the basis it’s gone and forgotten and we get on with things.
“Tonight, they got behind us great from the start and at the end they’ve clapped the players off and it’s been a long time since that’s happened at home.”
