OWEN HOWE has revealed that a training ground bust-up was behind his shock departure from hometown club Tiverton Town.
The striker, who made his debut for the Yellows when he was just 16 years old, stunned fans last week when he announced he was to leave Ladysmead after seven years.
And it appears that all was not well with the Southern Premier newcomers on explaining his decision yesterday.
Howe, the club’s youngest ever goalscorer, said: “I’ve always get along with [manager] Martyn [Rogers], and he’s always done me well. But we had a training ground bust-up and a little argument and he decided to get rid of me because of it.
“We had a great season last year with promotion and it’s just sad that it’s come to an end the way it did, but he’s the manager and it’s his decision.
“I’m a Tiverton lad, I’ve always had the fans behind me and I’ve got along with all the lads.”
Rogers, meanwhile, admitted Howe’s departure was a personal issue between the two, adding: “It’s football. You have a difference of opinion on different things and at the end of the day I’ve made a decision.
“It’s not about his ability for sure, but it’s something between me and him. I’ve got to manage that as I see fit and at the end of the day the team is more important.”
Howe turned out for Western League Premier side Willand Rovers on Saturday but insists he is just helping Russell Jee’s side out temporarily during a striker crisis.
“I helped them out on Saturday just to keep my fitness up,” Howe added. “I’m speaking to a couple of clubs at the minute. Within the next week I’ll probably have signed for someone else.”
