Guernsey return still a possibility for New Zealand-bound Ross Allen

By Jon Couch
Ross Allen refuses to rule out the possibility of an emotional return to despite heading off to live and work in New Zealand.
The 30-year-old leaves the island a legend after setting a phenomenal record of 239 goals in 226 appearances with the Green Lions.
But now the Bostik South side are having to adjust to life without their key marksman, who has decided to go Down Under having fallen in love with the country on a trip last season.
“This is the last year I could apply for my working holiday visa so the opportunity is too good to pass up,” Allen told GuernseyFC.com. “I feel that travelling woke me up to a few things and it was time to make a decision.
“The plan is to find some work over there and get set up with a team while exploring as much as I can. I love Guernsey FC but I have to do what’s right for me.
“I’m eager for new adventures and experiences and I have the freedom to pursue those challenges myself.”
Allen’s astonishing goal record earned him hero status at Footes Lane – but the hitman believes the club can push on without him.
“There have been some talented players knocking at the door for a while so now is the time for them to step up and develop in my place,” he added.
“The squad is in a better position than when I went travelling last season.”
So, with so much to plan the other side of the world and Allen not getting any younger, is this the end of an era for Tony Vance’s side? Not quite, Allen states.
“When I went travelling I knew it would be for a few months but this time I am moving to live and work so I can’t say when, or even if, I’ll be back,” he went on.
“I just don’t know how things will pan out at this stage but I’d like to think my journey with GFC is not yet done.”
