York City defender David Ferguson believes that the club’s under fire manager Martin Gray is still the right man for the job at Bootham Crescent.
The former Darlington boss has come under increased scrutiny from York fans in recent weeks as the Minstermen have seen their promotion hopes rapidly fade. Gray’s side have lost their last four league games and the 46-year-old has been subject to chants from sections of the home crowd calling for his dismissal.
However Ferguson believes that Gray has talents to turn around York’s recent fortunes. The left-back told the York Press, “Every single player is hurt when you see fans’ expressions like we have done.
“Some of it has been directed at the manager, but we have to do better on the pitch and that will help in terms of the fans’ feelings towards him.
“I still think he’s the right man, but I think it takes time. Others might think differently, but he will get this club promotion.
“I know he’s trying as hard as he can to do everything right for this club. As players, we have to show the same commitment, desire and hunger to win, because I know he will be hurting just as much as everybody else is.”
York dropped to 9th position in the National League North following Tuesday night’s disappointing defeat at FC United of Manchester. They are now two points adrift of the play-off pack and will be desperate to re-ignite their promotion push against Leamington at Bootham Crescent on Saturday.
