Maidstone United boss Harry Wheeler says he desperately wants to see his side deliver a knockout blow to Chesterfield tomorrow, but he hopes it doesn’t come at the cost of Martin Allen losing his job.
The Spireites boss has come under a wave of pressure following a horror run of results that has seen his side register only two points from their last ten games. The club’s latest defeat – a 3-1 reverse at the hands of Maidenhead United at the Proact Stadium on Tuesday night – followed what Allen described as a ‘shocking’ performance last Saturday when his side went down 3-0 to Gateshead, also at home.
Wheeler, whose battling Stones held on valiantly for a 1-0 win on the road this week against Aldershot Town following Blair Turgott’s goal midway through the first half, remains adamant his side can continue their recent run of form tomorrow that has seen them edge clear of the National League relegation zone, but has urged his men to continue showing the collective effort that saw them keep a dominant Shots side at bay.
“The boys showed a lot of spirit to come here (to Aldershot) and see out the win,” Wheeler told The Non-League Paper. “You can say they haven’t been on the best of runs but at home they have been, and remain, very strong.
“We dug in and did what we had to do, and we can take a lot from that performance into Saturday.
“I just hope Martin is still there for Chesterfield and he sticks it out as manager. Nobody wants to see a fellow manager struggling. Obviously we have our own problems to keep an eye on and the number one priority is to take the three points and carry on with the little run we have put together.
“But it’s a tough situation they (Chesterfield) are in. I am sure he can, and will, turn things around though.”
