FORMER Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Grimsby Town and Lincoln City players Tony Daws has been handed the caretaker reins at Scunthorpe United following the dismissal of Keith Hill as manager this week.
Hill left the Iron second from bottom of the National League following their relegation from League Two last season.
They won their first game of the season, at home to Yeovil, but lost their next five, with Hill’s last game in charge being Monday’s 2-0 home defeat by FC Halifax Town.
Hill, the former Rochdale, Bolton and Tranmere boss, replaced Neil Cox in the Glanford Park hotseat in November 2021 but won just three of his 39 matches in charge.
After the Halifax defeat, Hill said: “I’m obviously disappointed and frustrated.
“I’m feeling the same emotions as the fans and the players, let’s not forget the players, because the players have gone through it today, far more than I have.
“We’re making mistakes, and they’re seeable in the situation that we find ourselves in. The players haven’t given up though, and under testing circumstances.”
Interim boss Daws oversaw yesterday’s visit of Boreham Wood, assisted by goalkeeping coach Paul Musselwhite and former Iron defender Michael Nelson.
Daws has been the Academy Manager at Scunthorpe since 2005 following roles at Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday.
Nelson, 42, who made 30 appearances for the Iron in the 2011-12 season, spent time as manager of Blyth Spartans in 2020-21 and was most recently assistant manager at Hartlepool United.
