Queen Elizabeth II was a lifelong patron of the Football Association and in 1966 shared in our nation’s most iconic moment when she handed the Jules Rimet Trophy to Bobby Moore.
Famously, the legendary England skipper spotted the Queen’s immaculate white gauntlets and quickly scrubbed the mud off his hands.
“Bobby noticed the Queen was wearing gloves,” recalled Geoff Hurst, whose hat-trick in the 4-2 win over West Germany brought the World Cup home.
